Mala Garden

One of the perennial challenges for hotel restaurants is attracting outside guests – something Mala Garden handles with ease. Word has clearly got around among locals and holidaymakers alike: this four-star spot is well worth a visit, even if you aren’t staying the night. The Bali-inspired interior has mellowed over time into something more serene and minimalist. The Buddha statues and elegant, Eastern-style architecture still whisper of Indonesia, but the overall look is now sleeker and more tasteful, inside and out. Chef László Forisek has long been at the helm, a bastion of stability in the ever-changing Balaton dining scene. The menu strives to meet diverse tastes, but is far more cohesive than in years past. Seasonal dishes hint at a kitchen with its finger on the pulse, and the sense of refinement carries through from design to dining. The Thai coconut-vegetable soup was a delight: a fragrant, spiced broth with just the right kiss of acidity and cream. The duck breast main was cooked to a perfect pink – though the skin lacked crispness. The pumpkin gratin side was playful, with thin slices layered with toasted pumpkin seeds, and the pickled plum a perfect foil for the richness of the duck. Only the cloyingly sweet chestnut purée struck a false note in an otherwise finely tuned dish. Service is crisp, confident, and polished. The wine and sparkling selection is deep, and the pairings were spot-on. Mala Garden remains a beacon of quality in Siófok.
