Szomszéd Bisztró

A refreshing splash of colour in Debrecen, Szomszéd Bisztró has found an appreciative audience despite its somewhat less-than-ideal location. The warm and accommodating staff offer polished yet unobtrusive service from start to finish. A soothing yet uplifting selection of jazz and blues adds to the ambience, with special praise due for the perfectly balanced volume—a detail so many places fail to get right. All baked goods are made in-house, with the sourdough bread also available for takeaway. The wood-fired pizzas are tempting, but we opt for the à la carte menu. The Pike perch ‘Kárpáti’ style, shrimp, curd cheese dumplings hints at a modern approach: the fish’s flesh is slightly firm but still juicy, with perfectly crisped skin. The prawn sauce is silky and pure in flavour, while the soft curd dumplings genuinely taste of fresh curd. The Pumpkin and poppy seed tart turns out to be a French-style mousse dome rather than a tart. Though its glaze had lost some of its shine during storage, the combination of pumpkin, poppyseed, and citrus proved delightfully harmonious. Chef Róbert Magyar’s creations would hold their own on a national level. He effortlessly intertwines Hungarian flavours with well-known spices and techniques from international cuisines, crafting bold and expressive dishes with playful nods to Asia and South America. Barring a few minor technical flaws, the kitchen continues to push boundaries - having stood as one of Debrecen’s most exciting culinary destinations for years.
