One of Lake Balaton’s most renowned restaurants, Kistücsök, re-invented itself in 2021 as Kistücsök Food & Room, now also a four-star boutique hotel. The expanded concept includes not only the spacious restaurant but also the Chef’s Room and a charming small deli brimming with house-made specialities. Guests with reservations for the Chef’s Room are welcomed with a reception drink at the hotel’s ground-floor front desk before being escorted upstairs. Much like a chef’s table experience, you can relax in a modern living space within arm’s reach of the open kitchen. The boundaries between host and guest melt away, fostering a relaxed, convivial mood – though the hum of the extractor fan was slightly distracting. As part of Kistücsök’s evolution, the Chef’s Room menu has taken on a distinctly plant-focused approach, complemented by top-notch fish and meat, such as trout and game. In an elegant nod to recycling and environmental consciousness, the accompanying brown butter arrives in a custom dish crafted by an artist using shattered glassware repurposed from the restaurant. Among the dishes we sampled, one of the standouts was a vegan creation – Beetroot, Horseradish, Pear – where the clever interplay of acidity transformed these earthy, wintry ingredients into a vibrant harmony. To accompany the meal, the carefully curated wine pairings are as refined as the selection in the restaurant’s extensive cellar, which houses hundreds of rare vintages. House-made syrups and lemonades provide a refreshing alternative. With its 8+1-course tasting menu, Kistücsök offers one of the best-value fine dining experiences in the country. Yet, its spirit leans more toward leisure dining – an intimate, unpretentious gourmet experience.
