Rumour by Rácz Jenő

The opening of Rumour generated enormous buzz – not least because Jenő Rácz is one of Hungary’s bona fide star chefs. With the launch of his own restaurant in 2021, the question was whether, after years of study and success abroad, he could strike the right chord with diners at home. The answer has been a resounding yes. The bold concept works brilliantly – so much so that they’ve recently expanded the booking options. In addition to the classic dinner experience, the pre-theatre menu starting at 5pm is a shrewd idea: shorter, more affordable, and open to a wider audience. Guests are seated shoulder-to-shoulder around a U-shaped counter, all eyes drawn to the dramatic open kitchen. But Rumour has proved so popular that a Dining Room menu is now also available, offering a more conventional arrangement at separate tables. Rumour’s mystique is heightened by its location – the entrance is not at the official address, but tucked down a quiet side street. A burgundy velvet curtain conceals this gastronomic sanctum, its walls adorned with the contemporary art collection of co-owner Károly Gerendai – even the lavatory features a work by Tamás Konok. While comfort may not be the bar stools’ strong suit, the stream of sensory stimulation quickly makes you forget you’re perched on one. Rarely do you find such a level of professionalism. From arrival to farewell, the service is attentive yet never overbearing; each dish described with effortless fluency by every member of staff. The ingredients are impeccable, and the evening scintillates with surprises. No spoilers here, but suffice it to say that not every dish is not quite what it seems, especially one masterpiece which arrives under a veil of secrecy, named only “???”. Each plate feels like a work of visual art – even those based on deceptively simple ideas, like potato and leek soup or the culinary gag “forgotten banana” dessert. With his dining room consistently full, Jenő Rácz has proved that virtuoso fine dining and meticulously orchestrated hospitality do indeed have an audience. A singular, unforgettable experience.
