A well-situated restaurant right next to the public beach at the marina in Balatonmáriafürdő. If you sit outside, you will be treated to lovely lake views, swans often glide by to complete the idyllic scene. The Port is both a restaurant and a guesthouse. While the building is a typical socialist-style southern Balaton holiday structure, it is constantly being updated and renovated. Still, it is far from a glamorous destination. You can show up straight from the beach. The staff is exceptionally attentive; during our visit, they seemed to anticipate our every need. The wine list focuses exclusively on local producers, which is a thoughtful touch, and the selection is still impressively broad. The kitchen is clearly in good hands under Zsolt Berki. He strikes a smart balance between the comfort food expectations of Balaton holiday-goers and his own culinary ambitions: familiar flavours, creative presentations, and dishes that are visually stunning. The smoked beef tartare was a standout, prepared in classic French style, topped with a pretty bundle of greens and citrusy dressing, offering just the right acidity. The braised beef cheek arrived with vadas root vegetable purée and sweet brioche dumplings. The meat was fork-tender, the sauce velvety and full of depth, while the marinated oyster mushrooms and tangy sour cream foam added unexpected contrast. None of the desserts featured local or seasonal ingredients, which we missed, but the coconut panna cotta with mango tapioca pearls made up for it. A smart, elegant dish with refined technique in every bite. The Port may appear modest, but behind the unassuming façade lies a surprisingly original and well-executed kitchen, paired with standout, genuinely warm hospitality.
