A tucked-away spot in Kecskemét, and that is exactly what gives it its charm. A beautifully renovated farmhouse with a grassy garden, a large shaded terrace, and a play area for kids. Inside, the space is surprisingly elegant, with tasteful furnishings, antique-style furniture, a fireplace, candlesticks, and chandeliers. It is far from an average restaurant interior. The staff are kind and attentive. The wine list is basic – and unfortunately, during our visit, the champagne was served warm. The old-school menu is long and descriptive, and in traditional fashion, the selection is generous. One dish, for example: Breaded pig’s foot and ear with tangy horseradish remoulade, crispy Makó onion chips, roasted sweet potato fries, and warm balsamic-braised beets. Both the ear and foot were prepared so well they could be cookbook examples, and the beets added a nice touch. Sadly, the crispy onion chips were missing, and the sweet potato fries did not quite hit the mark. Almost everything is house-made, including the bread and brioche, though the brioche was tough and dense, a reminder of why it is sometimes worth sourcing from a good baker. On the plus side, they do cater to special dietary needs, with options for various intolerances. This place is a local favourite in Kecskemét and the surrounding area. If you are looking for a refined atmosphere, classic hospitality, or even a romantic setting, 48 is a great choice.
