In the quaint southern Hungarian town of Csongrád, Bárka is the go-to dining choice. A stone’s throw from the Körös-torok beach and the old town known for its skanzen-like fishermen’s houses. The interior mixes modern armchairs with nods to Tisza-side taverns like a tiled stove and sewing machine-leg tables. They serve decent hamburgers and thin-crust pizzas, with a simple kitchen focused on honest flavours: fish soup can be ordered with catfish from Szegvár and scored carp; there’s pike-perch fillet baked whole in sourdough crumbs, catfish stew with layered curd-cheese noodles and pork crackling, and crispy golden schnitzel made with veal or pork loin. The soft curd dumplings come drizzled in honey, and the crêpe parcel has dreamily soft pastry. In summer, the outdoor grill adds extra charm.
