After several false starts, a fitting concept has finally taken root in this central location. A stone's throw from Ferenciek Square, the courtyard and former headquarters of the First National Savings Bank of Pest has been reborn as a contemporary steakhouse. Here, the city reveals one of its most charming faces: the leafy, balconied calm of an old Pest courtyard, resplendently renovated, striking a balance between friendliness and urban opulence. Greenery abounds in the now-fashionable “indoor garden” style, smuggling a dash of warmth into every corner. Chandeliers, glass and mirrors create a bustling, cosmopolitan bistro feel – and the kitchen now lives up to the setting. It’s delightful to see staff go the extra mile. On our visit, the young servers did just that, offering conversation as well as attentive service. The steak menu is appealing, but pescatarian and vegetarian options also tempt. Our Argentine rump steak came with an imaginative array of sides: fried artichoke, thyme-roasted sun-dried tomatoes, Béarnaise sauce, pecorino shavings, and the requisite chimichurri. The meat was tender and flavourful, topped with melting flakes of salt. Drinks are clearly a priority. A zesty cocktail and craft beer selection is joined by dedicated whiskies, rum, and gin & tonic menus. The wine list focuses on Hungarian, Italian, Spanish, New Zealand, and South American labels, with plenty of sparkling choices too. An inviting steakhouse and bar, full of promise, in the heart of the city.
