Even the name Főőrség commands a certain presence, Royal Guard Café makes that even more clear. Set in the newly restored wing of Buda Castle, this café and restaurant offers a setting that feels refined and grand, inside and out. But instead of heavy-handed historic décor, the interior is brightened up with modern touches: pink velvet chairs, wall murals, and playful paintings “dangling” from the ceiling blend old-world charm with contemporary flair. The menu is thoughtfully put together. As a tourist hotspot, it covers the must-haves, but the real highlights are the creative takes on classic Hungarian dishes. Instead of the typical Újházi hen soup, they cook it the traditional way – with rooster. The crispy pork knuckle arrives on a saber, and even the old-school Grenadiermarsch has been reinvented. Now called Gránátos Induló, it swaps the Viennese-style sautéed ham dices for Debrecziner sausage and crispy bacon. Bonus points for the homemade noodles and the side of tangy pickled cucumber. The wine list focuses on Hungarian selections, and since it is also a café, the coffee and tea offerings are well worth exploring.
