Bodrogkeresztúr is no stranger to culinary acclaim – and now has another venue to tempt visitors. Opened in 2024, Karám is the latest addition to this storybook Tokaj-Hegyalja village. Once a cattle shelter and bull stable, the buildings have been tastefully transformed: natural materials and regionally faithful detailing preserve the rustic charm. Thick stone walls keep interiors cool, while the hillside garden invites you to apricate in the sun. The wood-fired pizza oven blends seamlessly into the scene, while a second building houses the main dining room – minimalist, intimate, and more elegant. The kitchen offers an embarrassment of riches: from gourmet pizzas with airy crusts to refined takes on traditional Sunday roasts, and even full tasting menus. House-made ice cream is a badge of honour, and the presence of both a permanent and daily-changing menu reflects the kitchen’s energy. A rich selection of French caviar was a surprise in such a rural setting. The wine list focuses on local producers and offers a generous by-the-glass selection. We visited in asparagus season, and the soup put the vegetable’s natural sweetness centre stage in a clean, balanced composition. Cod with hollandaise and white asparagus was presented in a stylish skillet – crisp-skinned and flawlessly cooked. Only the rabbit liver, slightly overdone, fell short. With gracious, discreet service and a clearly ambitious kitchen full of intent, this is a place that restores body and spirit alike. All the ingredients are there for Karám to emerge as one of the area’s finest.
