Két Szerecsen has long been a fixture of the ever-changing Budapest restaurant scene, confidently holding its own since 1998. From early morning until late into the night, this stretch of Nagymező Street known as the ‘Pest Broadway’ brims with life. The restaurant embraces its heritage: old menus line the walls, and the staff uniforms not only display names, but also the year each team member joined. Rarely does a restaurant boast the same head chef since its opening, not to mention a sous-chef who's been part of the crew for almost as long. House classics — goulash, duck liver, meltingly tender beef cheek, fried chicken with mash, and somlói sponge cake — have held their place on the menu for decades. Recent years have seen a turn to more delicate, Mediterranean-inflected cooking, balanced by enduring French and Hungarian signatures. Despite the restaurant’s high turnover, there’s still a homely warmth to the cooking. The paprika potatoes with Mangalitsa pork neck, for instance, were so tender they could have been feasted on with a spoon. The curd dumplings are generously portioned, paired with velvety cinnamon sour cream. When the weather allows, the wide windows are flung open, merging the restaurant with its leafy terrace and conjuring the feel of a bygone, cherished Pest. Indoors or out, there’s always a lively atmosphere — and during peak hours, booking is strongly recommended. Their weekday lunch menu is one of the best value offerings in the city.
