Janka Gelencsér and chef Richárd Csillag have carried the spirit of Lokal47 into Lokalist, and in doing so, Nagykanizsa has gained a restaurant of national renown. Here, “made from local ingredients” is no hollow catchphrase but the owners’ guiding creed: from beef to fruit and veg to cheese, everything hails from nearby producers. They even run their own small farmers’ market, “Market in the Garden”. The menu is delightfully unconventional: snacks and breakfasts are served all day; the lunch menu is the best in town; and evenings bring more snacks and small plates. The chef’s fine dining pedigree is unmistakable, yet his style remains light, playful, and distinctive. The catfish croquettes, breaded wild boar, and hot sandwiches are dishes to write home about.
