Mandragóra

One of the most atmospheric restaurants in Víziváros, Mandragóra boasts a leafy terrace with a welcoming, family-like charm. A street-facing chalkboard gives a preview of the daily specials. The space itself is distinctive—just a few steps down takes you to the terrace, and from there, into a cosy semi-basement. Operating for two decades, recent renovations have brought genuine warmth, with deep greens, turquoise hues, and plush velvet seating. As part of its renewal, Ádám Mersitz took over as head chef in 2023, joined by András Sipos. Mandragóra is a true fine bistro, where a seasonal, frequently updated menu is complemented by the chef’s specials and a five-course tasting menu. At lunchtime, a streamlined set menu at friendlier prices makes it a popular spot for midday dining. The wine list is curated with care, featuring Hungarian selections arranged by region and international choices sorted by country, with an ever-changing selection by the glass. The focus on quality extends to craft beers, cocktails, gin & tonics, and house-made soft drinks. During our visit, an enticing starter of buttermilk-brushed, firm-textured salmon arrived with frisée salad, dill oil, and plenty of fresh dill, served with house sourdough. A creative and well-balanced dessert followed—poppy seed sponge scented with lemon zest, paired with wild berry cream, tapioca crisp, fresh basil, and sugared raspberry dust. Mandragóra’s terrace buzzes with life in fair weather, and it remains the heart and soul of this inviting bistro, with its shaded outdoor seating.
