Pavillon de Paris

10 | 20

A secret garden at the foot of Castle Hill where Budapest reveals its most enchanting side. Ancient trees cast shifting shade over ivy‑clad walls by day; come nightfall, a warm golden glow from overhead fairy lights bathes the space, lending it a filmic, softly romantic air. In clement weather, the wrought‑iron tables outside are the coveted seats, though the covered glass pavilion offers the same verdant, leafy illusion as if you were still outdoors. This beguiling setting is devoted to French cuisine – even the menu lists the dishes in French first. Lobster bisque, vichyssoise, boeuf bourguignon, crème brûlée – the classics are all here. Yet the standout dish of our visit was a detour into Asia: exquisitely prepared prawns entitled crevettes à l'ail, gingembre, piment, soja. The Burgundy snails are equally well executed – a rarity on Budapest menus today. Perhaps French chansons would have provided a more harmonious soundtrack than retro disco, yet even with such quirks, Pavillon de Paris remains a charming Parisian escape in the heart of Buda – an invitation to linger and savour at an unhurried pace.
