Pest-Buda Vendéglő

For more than 300 years, an inn, tavern or eatery has stood on the site now occupied by Pest-Buda—a charming boutique hotel and restaurant in the heart of the Buda Castle District. With its bookshelves, red faux-leather booths, red-and-white chequered napkins and Thonet chairs, the atmosphere is steeped in nostalgia, yet never weighed down by it. The staff are friendly and attentive, and it’s rare to hear such fluency in multiple foreign languages—not just English. The kitchen pays homage to traditional Hungarian gastronomy, a principle echoed in the drinks list, where only one Champagne breaks the commitment to Hungarian wines. The food is styled as ‘Grandma’s kitchen’, obviously with the limits of a restaurant setting, and plating is intentionally simple. It’s refreshing that the dishes are not garnished with unnecessary visual flourishes. Locals and tourists alike flock here for beloved Hungarian staples such as Újházy chicken soup, beef cheek stew, stuffed cabbage and curd cheese pasta. On our visit, a classic bistro favourite, the hortobágyi pancake, proved a delightful surprise: the filling was finely chopped rather than minced, and the paprika sauce had a beautiful colour and smooth consistency—thick, but not starchy. Equally impressive was the paprika chicken, made with tender thigh, creamy sauce and fresh, pillowy spätzle. Overall, the flavours are solid, though a more refined approach to technique and dessert offerings would undoubtedly boost the rating. Whether seated beneath the vaulted ceiling or out on the cobbled terrace, there are moments when it is genuinely gratifying to immerse yourself in an atmosphere like that of Pest-Buda.
