Porcellino Grasso

Porcellino Grasso is up in Rózsadomb, just a few blocks from Mechwart Park. One of the big draws here is the spacious, inviting terrace bordered by green hedges – it really adds to the charm of the place. The dining area is semi-basement level, with Italian touches that stop short of being over-the-top, which can sometimes happen in trattorias. The atmosphere is warm and almost homey, with a strong family-friendly vibe. There is even a play corner for kids that has been smartly tucked away from the main area, so the noise does not bother the other guests. Everything is in place for this to be a local favourite – and when we visited at lunchtime, the almost full house proved just that. Service was smooth and efficient. The menu sticks to what you would expect from a good trattoria, it covers everything from seafood and pasta to the classic thin-crust, crispy-edged Italian pizzas. Plus, they have got plenty of options for kids, too. The wine selection is a real standout: the Italian labels dominate, but there is also a solid range of Hungarian wines from all the major wine regions. Out of the roughly 200 bottles on the list, about a third are available by the glass. Presentation is elegant but relaxed, with quality tableware. The servers strike a nice balance, they are around just when you need them. The carpaccio was excellent, and the wild garlic pesto fusilloni made with fresh house pasta, padrón peppers, and pine nuts was especially tempting thanks to its seasonal twist. Overall, the kitchen delivers well, with fair prices for the quality. The place has a cozy, family feel, but it is also totally suitable for a business lunch or even a romantic dinner.
