"Clean yard, tidy house" – this socialist-era household sign might be the first thing that comes to mind when you see the spotless white walls and the well-kept garden. Porta in Pannonhalma offers a calming countryside atmosphere paired with gourmet cuisine. The interior is minimalist but inviting, with set tables and walls decorated with photos of the abbey and the surrounding area, as well as contemporary paintings. The friendly staff really add to the overall experience. The menu is fusion-style, with some bold, sometimes slightly over-the-top pairings – like French onion soup with miso or smoked pork knuckle pappardelle with coriander gremolata. The street food section does not quite match the restaurant’s refined style, but it might be aimed at hikers and cyclists passing through. The chef clearly puts thought into even the simpler dishes. During our visit, the wild garlic potato cream soup was silky and well-seasoned. The venison-style dish came with a rich, flavourful sauce, and the fried, pressed beef neck with porcini bread dumplings sounded genuinely intriguing. With a bit more attention to kitchen execution, this place could easily raise its game. Porta is a solid choice for a meal in Pannonhalma, especially on a beautiful day out.
