Szent Domonkos Vendéglő

10.5 | 20

Várvölgy lies on the eastern side of the Keszthely Hills – a tiny, picturesque village of just over 900 souls. Its patron saint is St Dominic, after whom the restaurant is named. The eye is drawn immediately to the traditional building, and inside, a more eclectic interior beckons – one clearly shaped by respect for the past. On our visit, a fire crackled in the hearth, adding much to the inviting atmosphere, alongside the warm welcome and flavours that felt straight from a grandmother’s kitchen. Here, the food speaks for itself: no grand illusions, just familiar flavours and first-rate ingredients crafted with care and served with easy-on-the-eye presentation. Top-notch, fresh sourdough complemented the pork knuckle rillettes perfectly, and our main – duck liver and pork tenderloin – was exquisitely prepared. The truffle and creamy, silky mash complemented the noble ingredients with finesse. We would, however, have gladly seen a few more exciting local wines on the drinks list. A true old-school inn – but not stuck in the past. A charming, lovable spot.
