Ürömi Hütte

Üröm Hütte has long outgrown its status as a local favourite—word of its excellent kitchen has spread far and wide. Linked to television personality András Sváby, the restaurant plays on the hütte (ski lodge) theme in name only; there was never a lodge here, but the ski lift out front adds to the playful illusion. Set in the Rókahegy area, this cosy eatery also benefits from hassle-free parking. Inside, a pizza oven, sewing machine-legged tables, Thonet chairs, antique skis mounted on the wall, and children's drawings create a homely, lived-in charm. The staff are famously warm, welcoming first-time guests and sending them off with a thoughtful farewell—leaving the impression that next time, you'll return as a regular. The waiters know the menu inside out, guiding diners effortlessly through their choices, while service is both swift and precise. The menu is eclectic, a refined take on pub-style fare. Perfect with a drink are the tremulously soft roasted marrow with confit garlic and toast, the freshly baked crackling-laced spiral pastry, or the rarely seen duck gizzard stew with bryndza dumplings. One of our chosen desserts could have passed for a main: kaiserschmarrn with dried cranberries, homemade custard, and their “own jam”—both hütte-style and delightfully homemade. The wine and beer selection meets expectations, but the real draw lies in the house hütte drinks, such as Bombardino and Vodka Feige. No wonder Üröm Hütte remains a firm crowd-pleaser.
