21 Magyar Vendéglő

11 | 20

On the charming, cobblestone-lined Fortuna Street in the Buda Castle District, you will not have trouble finding the restaurant – the house number speaks for itself. The name leaves room for all kinds of associations from old card games to 21st-century vibes. According to their own philosophy, 21 Magyar Vendéglő aims to bring a “Szindbád-style” dining experience to life within these historic walls. The interior does not chase the latest design trends, but it definitely has character with its curved row of hanging lights, red La Marzocco espresso machine, warm browns, and plenty of green plants. The staff knows their stuff, they are quick, friendly, and happy to help with recommendations. The wine list features bottles from well-known Hungarian winemakers as well as smaller producers, though prices are noticeably steep. This restaurant, proudly dedicated to Hungarian cuisine, introduces local classics to tourists in the heart of the Castle District: goulash soup, Újházi-style chicken broth, chicken paprikash, and veal stew are permanent fixtures on the menu. There is even a little wink to locals with dishes like creamed spinach and fried eggs, and one curious historical mix-up: “Princess Sissi’s Hortobágyi-style pancake” (even though the Queen and the dish are from entirely different centuries). The menu is well-structured, with a few international dishes to balance out the traditional Hungarian flavours. Both the goulash and chicken paprikash are cooked with care – solid, no-nonsense versions. The strawberry mille-feuille we tried for dessert reminded us more of a caramel stroopwafel than a layered French pastry, but the flavors were pleasant all the same. With just a bit more attention to detail and dedication, 21 could really help raise the profile of Hungarian cuisine – it already has everything it needs to do that.
