Akali Port - JOSPER Grill & Lounge

This restaurant by the Balatonakali pier plays it safe—with a stunning setting, a Mediterranean-style grill kitchen and classic Hungarian favourites, it’s hard to go wrong. Simply being here is a pleasure: the lakeside lounge atmosphere is enhanced by rattan furniture, mature olive trees and lush greenery. Natural tones dominate, and the sail-like shades evoke the shape of fishing nets, inviting diners to linger in their soothing shade. The kitchen works with first-rate ingredients and the menu even features a few more creative touches. Dishes are presented simply but tastefully, in keeping with the setting—without any superfluous flourishes. The focus is, commendably, on solid execution and satisfying portions. The lamb palóc soup (quite similar to goulash but with sour cream) and the duck leg with cabbage noodles were both appetizing, honest dishes. The high point of our meal was the baked curd dumpling, made with the perfect technique so that it stayed moist inside. The dish was elevated further by a refreshing, pleasantly tart sour cream ice cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds. One welcome feature of the drinks menu is its emphasis on local wineries. Service is friendly, though it became apparent at several points that the waitstaff were a touch undertrained—the champagne, for instance, was served warm—but they were eager to make amends for any slip-ups. A strong summer choice for lunch or dinner if you’re after good food in a Mediterranean-style setting, with a sensational view of the lake.
