Aranybástya

Few restaurants can boast a more enviable location than Aranybástya, perched on the prime side of Castle Hill. Despite its bustling tourist surroundings, the spacious terrace remains an intimate, secluded retreat, offering a stunning panorama. The centuries-old walls are steeped in history, yet the meticulous renovation lends the building a fresh, elegant feel both inside and out, with interior design choices befitting a high-end restaurant. The appealingly informative menu features a "Hungarikum" tasting selection with wine pairings, as well as a variety of grilled dishes. We opt for classic Hungarian cuisine. The goulash soup takes on a hearty, one-pot interpretation—eschewing any hint of gastro-revolutionary zeal in favour of homely authenticity. The paprika chicken, with its pressed and moulded paprika-infused farce encasing the leg meat, feels somewhat dated in style, yet the dish shines in its details: buttery, pillowy spätzle and a cucumber salad subtly enhanced with elderflower notes. The aranygaluska arrives with yeast ice cream, elegantly finished tableside with a rich custard. In a playful nod to the building’s former owner, sugar baron Ferenc Hatvany, it is tastefully adorned with decorative candy floss. With its bold flavours, creativity, and cultural inference, it has the potential to become a beloved signature dessert. The wine list offers a solid selection of both Hungarian and international labels, with a particular strength in reds. The cocktail menu is notably more extensive than usual. Aranybástya’s storied history, unparalleled location, and unique character make it a compelling destination—a refined choice for celebratory lunches or romantic dinners, even for Hungarian guests.
