Baalbek Libanoni Étterem

Named after the ancient Lebanese city, Baalbek reopened on Belgrád Rakpart in 2022. Elegant and understated, the space steers clear of the usual decorative excesses associated with Middle Eastern restaurants. Instead, it exudes quiet refinement, with crisp damask tablecloths, warm lighting and soothing music setting the mood. This same duality runs through the whole experience: the dining room, bar and service feel unmistakably European in spirit, while the kitchen is led by Nizar Al Sayegh, a Lebanese chef with a deep cultural grounding and culinary authenticity. The result is a flavour profile adapted to European tastes, echoing the polished style of high-end Arab restaurants in Western capitals. Grilled and lamb dishes are where Baalbek excels, with a particularly generous and varied selection of hot and cold mezze. Adventurous diners will be rewarded by rarities such as kibbeh nayyeh, a boldly flavoured tartare of raw veal and bulgur. The kebabs and charcoal-grilled lamb are especially well executed: top-notch ingredients, smoky but not overpowering, and the meat cooked to perfection. Less successful was the decision to place the pita directly on the plate — not freshly baked, it turned soggy beneath the food. Dessert brought a surprise highlight: Baalbek’s version of om ali is far from cloying, with silken and crisp textures dancing through a warm pudding reminiscent of a Levantine bread-and-butter affair. Whether it’s an intimate dinner or a festive meal with a large group, Baalbek is a smart choice — all the better with a table full of mezze and bold flavours to share.
