Large windows connect the interior with the street, and in good weather, they are thrown wide open, giving guests the feeling of being both indoors and out. Just outside, the tram rolls by, adding the buzz and sounds of the city, nestled among grand old Pest apartment buildings that provide a charming urban backdrop. Service is impeccable, and the food blends Hungarian and cosmopolitan flavours of the classic bourgeois kitchen. Hungarian diners will appreciate the inclusion of seasonal vegetable stews; a thoughtful touch is that the often-polarizing dill in the marrow stew can be swapped for chives instead. The goulash is solid, reminiscent of a well-cooked homemade version. While the Caesar salad was made with a mixed greens base rather than traditional romaine, the standout dish was the house-smoked duck liver with mango sauce, onion jam, and toast: light, creamy, and impressively smooth in texture. The highlight of the evening were the cottage cheese dumplings – freshly made, airy and tender, served not with the usual sweet sour cream but with a refreshingly citrusy sour cream foam that was delightfully light. Biarritz is an ideal choice for those who appreciate the charm of traditional bourgeois dining.
