Csendülő

Noszvaj, a popular hiking destination near the Bükk Hills and Eger, draws many curious visitors eager to check out the restaurant owned by Hungary’s most famous psychiatrist. Dr Imre Csernus left city life behind, and open Csendülő, which he describes as a “restaurant, café, theater, and zone of tranquility.” The venue is set in a large, sloping garden dotted with two pretty little country houses. The restaurant operates inside one of the verandah-fronted cottages, where guests can dine indoors, out on the porch, or at garden tables. The interior is playfully eclectic and alternative: colourful furniture, quirky decorations, books, and games fill the space. A standout element of the décor – and the menu – is a diverse spirit collection, featuring everything from local pálinka to rare international distillates. A cheese wheel and open-view fridge further add to the atmosphere; servers prepare pasta directly from the parmesan wheel. Table settings evoke a homey, nostalgic vibe. Cutlery arrives on the plate with a napkin, vintage-style glass pitchers and old-school dishes appear on the table. The day’s menu is written by hand on a chalkboard, and when something runs out, it is simply crossed off. On our visit, there were plenty of staff on hand, including Dr. Csernus himself, who was actively serving guests. The kitchen focuses on hearty Hungarian comfort food. The Tisza-style catfish soup, cooked over an open flame, was rich, flavourful, and utterly satisfying. The beef bourguignon featured tender meat, a thick, flavourful sauce, and perfectly cooked vegetables. Its side, dödölle (a potato-based specialty), was beautifully seared and creamy on the inside. Surprisingly, the addition of green pepper gave it a fresh and well-balanced twist. Prices are on the higher side, but the experience is truly one of a kind. Csendülő is well worth the detour, even from far away.
