Csopaki Resti by Laurel is more than just a fun gastro-gimmick – though it’s great as that too! This tiny, ten-seat restaurant is set up in an old railway buffet at Csopak station, meaning you can even take the train to get there for a unique gourmet experience. The place is a spin-off of the now-closed Laurel restaurant in Budapest, keeping its memory alive on the shores of Lake Balaton. Given its size, the vibe here is something special – warm, intimate, and laid-back. While sitting at the bar, guests can watch the open kitchen closely, where Bence Karácsony not only cooks but entertains with his signature style and humor. He runs the show with just one other team member, who mainly handles service. The six-course tasting menu is carefully prepped in advance, with only the final touches done during the meal. There are set time slots for lunch and dinner, so reservations are a must. Adding to the experience, there’s live outdoor grilling right in front of the restaurant – even in winter! When we visited, meats, catfish, and flatbreads were sizzling on the open grill, while fresh pasta was hand-stretched right before our eyes. Beyond the top-notch food, Csopaki Resti has the kind of cozy, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like an old friend is cooking for you at home. Even if you arrive solo, chances are you will leave with a few new connections by the end of the night. A restaurant experience this unique and high-quality is a rare find anywhere in Hungary!
