Echo Étterem

Echo sits atop the famed Echo Hill in Tihany—nomen est omen. Few restaurants can rival its panoramic views: the circular building offers sweeping vistas from every angle. Set along one of the most well-trodden tourist paths in the region, it naturally draws in those who’ve made the climb—many of whom opt to pause for lunch on one of the generously sized terraces. The thatched-roof building houses an interior with a faintly French, bistro-like charm: cheerful décor, copious lavender, and a serene, summery air. The welcome is warm and genuine, and the service notably courteous from start to finish—sadly not always a given around Lake Balaton. The kitchen casts a wide stylistic net, with dishes spanning bistro, Hungarian-style, and even fine dining. Some plates lean rustic, others contemporary, and portions are indulgent. Occasionally, the kitchen overreaches: the wild boar stew, for instance, was overshadowed by an overly elaborate garnish with too many competing flavours. On the other hand, the sturgeon tartare was a standout starter—well-balanced, beautifully plated, and impressively fresh. A delectable choice in clement weather. Among the most original offerings is slambuc: a traditional potato-pasta dish elevated with crumbled Mangalica sausage and a lively pickled cucumber chutney. The richly flavoured mix of mashed and new potatoes is augmented with paprika and, true to the authentic recipe, studded with crispy bacon. Highly recommended. The wine list is concise but everything is available by the glass—a definite plus. One thing is certain: diners won’t leave hungry, and the view alone is worth the climb.
