Within reach of the bustle of the city, Városmajor remains a world unto itself. Fióka leans into this village-like setting with its convivial style. Guests settle on brightly painted chairs beneath leafy trees and sun sails in the garden of the exposed-brick house, while the conservatory keeps things bright and airy even in the colder months. Inside, colour dominates, with bird-themed wallpaper and a striking wine wall. Wine plays a major role here, and the list is uniquely structured—distinguishing light and full-bodied bottles. Selections range from up-and-coming to established names, both Hungarian and international, with most available by the glass. The selection of local craft beers also holds intrigue. The service suits the setting: young, lively, and full of energy. Our server, who also happened to be the sommelier, conversed congenially with guests. The kitchen has come into its own in recent years, thanks to a clear shift in direction. The food avoids pretension and benefits from a small plate concept that draws on Spanish, Asian, and Middle Eastern influences, with plenty of cross-pollination between cuisines. It was a smart move to retain a few Hungarian favourites too—both the marrow bone with horseradish cream and the curd dumplings were majestic. Fióka doesn’t just pay lip service to its family-friendly reputation, with a genuine play corner for children. A no-frills spot on the rise, with a laid-back atmosphere fuelled by great wine.
