The restaurant inside the Tihany Yacht Club guesthouse offers an unorthodox concept. On weekdays the menu is tight, catering primarily to guests arriving by boat, but come the weekend, it’s all about chef Dániel Varga’s Asian-fusion kitchen. He already has a loyal following, an impressive feat given he splits his time between Budapest and Tihany. Pushing the envelope is in his blood and labels like punk, progressive and Asian follow him wherever he goes. There is, however, a certain haphazardness to the place – their website, for example, doesn’t even work. And yet it is a place worth checking out – a casual mash-up of lakeside street food, pizza parlour, and stylish Asian eatery. The patio is relaxed and homely, while the interior is minimalist and bright with subtle Asian touches. The mosaic-tiled oven turns out superb pizzas crafted by an Italian chef – expect airy, bubbly dough, bold crusts and quality Italian toppings. The menu is promising, and while the teamwork is a touch slapdash, our waiter was friendly and doing his best. On one visit, we had a strikingly rich berry soup – almost sauce-like in its density, with a buttery biscuit crumble perched confidently on top. The breaded cutlet leaned in the direction of Japanese katsu, served with herb-laced mashed potatoes, pickled mustard seeds, and a refined sauce. A side of coleslaw felt like another example of overkill from this chef, but it’s precisely this unfussy, free-spirited approach to cooking that makes the place utterly endearing.
