Gundel is more than a restaurant—it is a landmark of Hungarian hospitality, an institution. Its grand dining halls have been spectacularly renovated, lightened in tone while preserving the early-20th-century elegance and old-world atmosphere of the grand old hotel restaurants. A traditional Gypsy band evokes the spirit of yesteryear, clearly to the delight of the guests, though the horse-drawn carriage placed among the tables may be one visual flourish too far. In fine weather, the legendary Gundel garden offers a chance to dine within earshot of the City Park and Budapest Zoo. The service is both polished and warm—rarely do you see waiters in white gloves these days fussing over diners. As part of the restaurant’s 2021 rebirth, a curated selection of its most iconic dishes has been reimagined under the banner Gundel National 11, faithful to the roots of the original dishes. The daytime menu is more concise, while dinner is available as a two-, three- or four-course offering, with a dedicated Sunday lunch as well. The paprika chicken with spätzle is a highlight, its silky, collagen-rich, glossy sauce of remarkable quality. Among the classic desserts, the Gundel pancake with dense chocolate sauce and the Hungarian trifle, delicately layered from vanilla, walnut and cocoa sponge, are both outstanding. Corporate chef András Wolf seems to have finally guided Gundel in the right direction—one that might just lead Hungarian diners to reclaim it as their own once more.
