Káli Fecske

Salföld is a picture-book village in the Balaton Uplands, just three kilometres from the lake. Káli Fecske (Káli Swallow) occupies the shell of the old local schoolhouse and now serves a broader cultural mission, not just as a restaurant: there’s an art gallery, an open-air stage for concerts, film screenings and theatre, plus a BBQ garden, ice cream counter, and mini playground. The eponymous swallows have even moved in under the stage eaves. Just next door, Salföld Farm awaits, where visitors can marvel at native Hungarian breeds. Though a cultural venue, Fecske is no village community centre. The former schoolhouse has been tastefully restored and outfitted: rustic but never stiff, with a relaxed mix of styles and furniture. The food menu is short and sharp; the drinks list more expansive. There’s basil cordial, homemade lemonades, pálinka from local distillers, craft beer, and a wine list led by Badacsony. Cocktails are light and unfussy. They run a globally inspired bistro kitchen, with distinctive tableware that adds to the experience. One dish is served on a plate shaped like a giant seashell; another seems to have been nibbled by birds. They perfectly suit bold dishes like deep-fried layered pig’s ear in a crisp crust, or venison stew with dödölle (potato dumplings) and a rich, rustic sauce made for mopping up. Pink pepper and marinated onions bring extra brightness and tang. Káli Fecske is a place to feed your body, stir your soul and lift your spirits.
