At this suburban bistro, you would not guess that a renowned chef is behind the stove in a family-run restaurant. Kálmán Fülepi, the owner, chef, and restaurant manager, is often seen in the dining area and loves chatting about the dishes. In short, Kami Kisvendéglő offers a warm and friendly dining experience. This is not the world of trendy bistros: we are in Újpest, on the Northern edge of the city, and the decor is simple and practical, with a touch of ‘90s nostalgia. The family-house vibe call for traditional Hungarian dishes, but Fülepi’s having more than one personal twist. His cooking and serving style is easily recognizable: traditional dishes alongside fusion creations that take you from Morocco to Indonesia. The menu is diverse and occasionally witty, like the "Tripes with knuckle or knuckle with tripes, the way mathematicians like it." A fan favourite is Fülepi’s Moroccan steak tartare and the venison bolognese with homemade pasta, but there are also fun menu surprises, like the smash burger that is taking over the street food scene. The wine list offers great-value options, and there is a wide selection of pálinka and spirits, with exciting pairings like the Paprika Gin & Tonic. The staff embodies the spirit of the place, and when the weather is nice, the garden terrace fills up. The regulars who frequent this spot are so numerous that it is something any restaurant would be proud of.
