Kismező Étterem

A bistro promising authentic Hungarian cuisine on Nagymező Street, cheek by jowl with the Operetta Theatre. With its generous terrace set beside the pedestrian-friendly pavement extending towards Andrássy Avenue, it is evening when the spot comes into its own—especially in a neighbourhood so rich in theatres, galleries and lively cafés. But at Kismező, they make a point of moving beyond the usual simple, homestyle approach. Their concept highlights beloved regional dishes from Upper Hungary, Transylvania, the Great Plain and the Southern Lands. You’ll still find familiar names on the menu—Transylvanian stews, Hortobágy-style creations, and ‘grandmother’s’ favourites—but this is far from a culinary museum. The plating is stylish, the kitchen modern, and there is no forced reinvention for reinvention’s sake. The veal stew arrives as large, meltingly tender chunks of meat in a rich, thick sauce, with warm bread rolls for dunking. The consommé is comfortingly nostalgic, yet has an intensity and concentration of flavour rarely achieved at home. Stuffed cabbage à la Máramaros comes with a twist: the lamb filling is wrapped in Savoy cabbage—an inauthentic touch, perhaps, but one that adds vibrant colour and elegance to the plate. Foreign guests playing it safe are also catered for with Caesar salad and an Angus burger—made from Borsod-reared beef. The desserts lean closer to the homely, including a rustic corn cake with rosehip jam. The wine list focuses on eastern Hungary and Transylvania, while the drinks menu includes playful nods to Hungarian drinking culture like VBK (red wine and cola), “spiked” beer, and retro vodka-soda-raspberry. A one-of-a-kind concept with standout flavours on the Pest Broadway.
