LEO Bistro

One of the capital’s most dramatically scenic spots is home to Leo Bistro—with the Leo rooftop bar above. The name is a nod to the iconic lions of the Chain Bridge, clearly visible from the ground-floor terrace and dining room of the Clark Ádám Square hotel. Stepping through the shimmering ‘curtain’, guests are greeted by an opulent bar on the right and an open kitchen on the left. Leo reveals a different character by day and night. From 7am, breakfast is served, and the bistro remains open right through until midnight. The cosmopolitan interior is laced with Art Deco flair, softened by greenery during the day and shifting to a more bar-like atmosphere in the evening. The “Art Corner” hosts a rotating series of contemporary art exhibitions. Service is attentive, with the manager picking up on even half-heard requests with cheerful efficiency. Chef Roland Varga draws from Hungarian, French and vegetarian traditions, with the occasional wink to the East. The menu is divided into creatively titled sections—one is whimsically named “Gateway to My Heaven on Earth.” The wine list focuses on Hungarian producers and is relatively compact, while the range of bubblies, mocktails and cocktails is far more extensive, stylishly presented in a small leather-bound booklet. The main course of duck leg was exquisitely roasted, served with boldly pickled, crunchy radish and intriguingly fermented beetroot—clever foils for the sweetness of the apple purée. The jus was unexpectedly light yet full of flavour. For dessert, the Leo curd selection came in several little bowls—a must-try for curd fans. Leo allows Hungarians to experience their city with the indulgence of a well-heeled traveller. It’s a vibrant destination with a strong kitchen.
