M. étterem

A true eccentric on Budapest’s dining scene, the enigmatically named M. étterem has been quietly doing its own thing since 2002. Secreted away on a drab street in Inner Erzsébetváros, it feels delightfully timeless and quirky. It’s tricky to define the style here. There’s something whimsical, even dreamlike about the space: faded furniture, tabletops and walls covered in paper printed with tiny furniture silhouettes, as if you had stepped into a doll’s house. Inside, there’s soft yellow light from wall sconces, vases of fresh flowers, and on the street-side terrace, ashtrays and wornout benches.. The welcome to this bewitching space is warm and familiar — more like being greeted by an old friend than dining out. The service might be unhurried at times, but never carelessly so; it simply suits the tone of the place. The menu changes regularly, built on fresh, seasonal ingredients and leans towards simplicity and sincerity, sometimes with rough edges, but generally producing honest, well-flavoured food made with care. Our octopus salad was a highlight — perfectly cooked, paired with marinated fish, crisp green beans and sweet cherry tomatoes. A dish of asparagus and butternut squash celebrated the season’s first greens with aplomb. The pricing is another pleasant surprise — well below most restaurants in the area. Instead of mass-market tourist service or late-night bustle, this is the kind of place where guests linger unhurried, just as they used to — and many return, time and again.
