But in early 2025, Maia Mexican joined the city’s recent wave of Latin-inspired openings—this time with a fusion twist. Location is key: just a few steps from the Basilica, the restaurant sits squarely on one of the city’s busiest tourist thoroughfares. Fittingly, Maia functions as much as a cocktail bar and social hangout as a dining destination. Here, food often plays a supporting role in the evening rather than taking centre stage. The interior is visually striking: striking shades, arched alcoves, lush leaves, macramé, and idiosyncratic design touches create a playful, welcoming atmosphere. Service is brisk and attentive, matching the venue’s upbeat energy. The kitchen occasionally integrates Hungarian elements into its Mexican-fusion lineup. The quality and creativity of dishes can be uneven, but the tacos del mar impressed—with gravlax-style salmon, crisp fennel, a punchy orange vinaigrette, and creamy beetroot mayo in satisfying harmony. The drinks list is a mixed bag. The wine offering is limited, but cocktails are a clear focus, with a broad spirits selection to back them up. A relaxed, sociable spot with a distinctive interior.
