Majorelle

Moroccan restaurants are still a bit of a rarity in Budapest, which makes Majorelle a refreshing exception. It is tucked away in a quieter, more elegant part of downtown, just a few minutes’ walk from Szabadság Square. The founders have steered clear of the heavy colours and drapes you often see in Middle Eastern spots – instead, the space is bright and airy thanks to tall street-facing windows, with clean, modern furnishings. A few tasteful Moroccan decor pieces subtly hint at the restaurant’s identity. Service is warm and attentive, just as you would expect from Middle Eastern hospitality. The kitchen caters to European tastes, so the flavours are a bit milder than what you would find in Morocco itself. The menu revolves around briwats, couscous dishes, bastillas, and tajines. Served in traditional conical clay pots, the tajines are as beautiful to look at as they are comforting – when the lid comes off and the food keeps bubbling right at your table, it is a lovely moment. The cooking is honest and well-executed, though not intensely spiced. The wine list includes a few Moroccan selections, but the real standout is the authentic Moroccan mint tea, poured from a traditional teapot into small glasses from up high. All in all, it is a charming little getaway into the flavours of North Africa, right in the heart of Pest.
