Malom és Kacsa Bisztró

Malom és Kacsa (Mill and Duck) wouldn’t feel out of place on the shores of a Swiss lake, so seamless is the harmony between its stunning interiors and surroundings. But fortunately, this refined location is right here on the banks of the Old Lake in Tata—where the air buzzes with a multitude of languages. It’s clear that Tata is becoming an increasingly popular destination. There is a huge turnover of guests, and it’s easy to see why. It functions as a family-friendly bistro, bar, ice cream parlour, event venue and guesthouse all in one. What immediately stands out is the wine list: few bistros in Hungary can match such breadth, and even wine bars would struggle to compete. Dozens of wines are available by the glass, with an emphasis on the local Ászár–Neszmély region, alongside national favourites and a smattering of international labels. The bistro kitchen also offers an extensive menu. The namesake duck appears playfully in several dishes, and lighter street-food-inspired plates also feature. The children’s menu is cleverly dubbed ‘little ducklings’. The lamb ragout soup was outstanding: rich and thick, with tender lamb and springtime al dente vegetables. A promising start. The Salon Duck—a signature dish by chef Tivadar Tóth—is one for offal fans, with duck gizzard taking centre stage. It came with an excellent side of potato dumplings: soft, fresh, and homemade. The sauce, however, felt slightly starchy, lacking finesse. Both the kitchen and front-of-house staff were clearly stretched during the Saturday lunchtime rush, but handled the pressure with poise. Malom és Kacsa offers a creative, honest kitchen and a wine selection well above the ordinary—worth a detour if you're in the region.
