Meshuga

There are few places in Budapest’s party district that are worth visiting for the food alone—Meshuga is one of them. For a concept built around Mediterranean and Tel Aviv-inspired flair, it would be hard to imagine a more fitting backdrop than the Gozsdu Courtyard. Set in one of the quieter inner walkways, the location offers a welcome escape from the bustle of the passage. Guests are greeted by a hostess checking bookings, and it is the restaurant manager himself who leads diners to their table, lending his expertise to navigate the menu and wine list. The selection may not be extensive, but it is well appointed—by the bottle and glass alike. The menu’s exotic dish names already hint at the restaurant’s confident and clearly defined style. That same clarity extends to the presentation: vibrant colours and consistent plating reflect a strong visual identity—and behind it all, a distinctive creative personality makes itself felt. Chef Yoav Abid’s cuisine reaches far beyond the rustic stylings typically associated with Israeli, Levantine or North African dining. The sharing concept only reinforces the authenticity of the experience. Dishes arrive in good time, with neither haste nor delay. The lamb shank is meltingly tender, shimmering with a glossy, richly fruity reduction. Outstanding. The green durum wheat (freekeh) is boldly spiced, transformed into something fragrant and exotic. A playful contrast of textures defines the muhallebi dessert, whose aroma and taste of rosewater summon the spirit of 1001 Nights. Rarely has the broader Israeli kitchen been presented at this level in Budapest. Meshuga sets a new standard.
