Following Sáo, Khan, and Quí, Opium is the fourth venture from the Vietnamese-Chinese-Hungarian ownership trio. Opened in autumn 2023, the restaurant and cocktail bar occupies a prime spot on one of Budapest’s culinary thoroughfares, Arany János Street. As with their earlier establishments, the concept is relaxed and sociable: guests may drop in for small bites with a drink, or settle in for a generous, shared-plate feast among friends. This venue surpasses even their previous ventures — it is a destination in its own right. The layered interior, styled in natural hues and moody tones, hints at the mystique of an opium den by night — yet the carefully curated décor draws you back into a modern dining space where Asian aesthetics meet understated elegance. Service is polished and attentive throughout. The staff are cheerful, well-versed in the menu, and maintain a smooth, seamless rhythm from start to finish. The kitchen highlights the best of Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine, with a level of finesse that elevates it far above the average Asian food bar. Of the dishes sampled, it was the charcoal-grilled scallop that proved a surprise standout — served in its shell and bathed in a warm blend of peanut, spring onion, garlic, and oyster sauce, it was a perfectly judged balance of delicacy and depth. The drinks list leans into the concept with Asian-inspired cocktails and Vietnamese coffee specialities that are well worth exploring. With Opium, Budapest takes another bold step towards global culinary stature. The atmosphere draws you in — and the kitchen towers among the best Asian dining spots in town.
