Eight kilometres from Esztergom, on the banks of the Little Danube, lies the village of Tát—home to Öreg Halász (Old Fisherman). The long, two-storey thatched-roof farmhouse is easy to spot, its imposing size drawing the eye from afar. Despite its name, this is no waterside fish tavern; rather, Öreg Halász operates as an inn, complete with guest rooms and a strong local reputation as a venue for events. A few years ago, the property was tastefully renovated. The interior was modernised with care, preserving traditional elements while steering clear of both kitschy folk aesthetics and trendy bistro minimalism. The spacious terrace is a real draw, and it’s clear the place is well equipped for high footfall. In the details, you sense a professionally run restaurant with well-trained staff who strike a fine balance—attentive, but never pushy. Beyond the expected classics, the menu features refreshingly distinctive ingredients: fallow deer, crispy young pork knuckle, whole roasted baby chicken, venison stew and fried catfish all grace the selection. The beef tartare, served with pickled vegetables, arrives in a strikingly generous portion—like every dish here. The dessert list, too, speaks straight to Hungarian hearts: vargabéles (a sweet noodle, cottage cheese and flaky filo pastry dessert), Somló sponge cake, chestnut mousse and homemade pancakes are showcased. Even simpler plates are presented with care and finesse. A fine example of thoughtful rural hospitality without grand pretensions—Öreg Halász is one of the best choices in the Esztergom region.
