Nestled in the hills above the northern shore of Lake Balaton, the tiny village of Balatonszőlős now boasts several standout restaurants — one of the finest being Picitmás. Set on the slopes just outside the village, this former farmhouse now flourishes with a vast covered terrace, tiered garden, playground, sun loungers, and vine-shaded tables beneath sailcloth canopies. It’s no place for a quick bite, and the hosts do everything they can to encourage lingering — whether gazing out across the herb garden and vines or soaking in the panoramic view that stretches all the way to Tihany. The interior channels an easygoing, rustic spirit with vintage accents — a wood-fired oven, cheerful armchairs, whimsical details, and the restaurant’s name spelled out in green foliage. Cutlery arrives in tiny wooden barrels, and the whole setting is warm, homely and full of character. Service is friendly, with a youthful rhythm. Local wines dominate the list, joined by a few Hungarian and international options, while craft beers and gin & tonic variations round out the drinks. The kitchen delivers bistro-style cooking with flair and confidence. Familiar favourites come reimagined — risotto topped with wild broccoli and herb butter ice cream, or crispy roast knuckle of pork with pommes boulangères from the wood oven, served with rainbow horseradish, mangalitsa crumbs and rosemary jus. The toasted poppy seed bread pudding arrives rolled in apricot jam, paired with a zingy sorbet for a perfectly pitched finish. Picitmás is worth the detour — no matter how far you’re coming from.
