Rézkakas Bistro

Rézkakas occupies a prime location in the city centre, offering a spacious terrace and even larger interior rooms. The restaurant defines itself as a bistro, yet the white tablecloths, linen napkins, extensive menu, and overall ambience are more reminiscent of a classic bourgeois establishment. Despite the kitchen’s efforts at innovation, traces of old-school Budapest hospitality persist: there is a live gypsy band, and the interior leans towards the heavy and dark, yet the atmosphere remains undeniably inviting. The service is polished and well-informed, with staff engaging effortlessly with international guests during our visit. The wine list features well-known Hungarian wineries, complemented by a selection of sparkling wines from abroad, while the rest of the drinks are standard restaurant fare. The menu includes perennial favourites such as steak tartare, Hortobágy-style pancakes, and grilled foie gras, alongside rustic peasant dishes like Szabolcs-style stuffed cabbage and dödölle (sautéed potato dumplings). Although it is a thoroughly downtown establishment seeking to refine traditional favourites with a touch of finesse, technical flaws in execution are not uncommon. Even long after Dániel Bernát's departure, his name still appears as the chef on the website (early 2025), reflecting a noticeable loss of momentum in the overall operation of the restaurant. Rézkakas does have all the right foundations - what remains is to carve out a distinct path and realise its full potential.
