For nearly 30 years, Krizia has quietly carved out a niche in a basement space on a quiet side street in Terézváros. Yet guests have never been in short supply—thanks, in part, to its setting in the heart of the theatre district. A true rarity in Budapest’s dining scene, the kitchen has been helmed by the same chef since day one: Graziano Cattaneo, who also owns the restaurant. The interior is gently old-fashioned and full of charm, adorned with nostalgic touches. Trends are shunned in favour of timeless elegance: crisp white tablecloths, dainty lace doilies as placemats, and starched white damask napkins folded with care. It ticks all the classic boxes—from two kinds of wine glass and freshly cut flowers to a full set of cutlery tailored to each course. Service is courteous and assured, yet the mood remains relaxed and homely rather than formal. The kitchen embraces the “less is more” philosophy, delivering honest, home-style Italian cooking with consistently high standards and no stinting on quality ingredients. Alongside the core menu, seasonal specials feature produce sourced fresh that very morning from the market. The veal tenderloin, paired with porcini and polenta, was a cut above: seared on the outside, blushing and tender within, bathed in a porcini-rich jus. The polenta struck a fine balance—rustic yet elegantly creamy, enriched with butter and cheese. At Krizia, the food isn’t Italian-style—it’s simply Italian, prepared with quiet confidence and care.
