Back in 2015, Sáo quickly became a cult favourite on Budapest’s dining map. That was around the time the Vietnamese food craze hit the city – and Sáo had all the right ingredients to be more than just another tourist trap in the party district. Even today, it continues to draw guests to the Gozsdu Courtyard who would otherwise steer clear of the crowd. Run by successful creatives from the fashion and design world, Sáo has its own little universe. The greenhouse-style glass front alone makes passers by in Holló Street stop, while the interior bursts with color: patterned wallpaper, hanging lanterns, birdcages, fans. The vibe is vibrant and playful – like a true food bar – with drinks to match: iced matcha lattes, Asian beers and spirits, and bold, Far East-inspired cocktails. The culinary concept is simple: classic Vietnamese eatery staples, but with better ingredients, more finesse, and elevated execution. Diners return again and again for the sticky pork belly, crispy dumplings, tempuras, and even the less-hyped dishes have found loyal fans here. Think of the refreshing mango-papaya salad with its sweet and tangy twist, or the fried tofu that actually tastes exciting for once. This Vietnamese-Chinese joint laid the groundwork for its younger siblings – KHAN, QUÍ, and OPIUM – all of which carry on Sáo’s mission of popularizing pan-Asian flavours in Budapest. Sáo is also a great place to kick off a night out in the city.
