Villa Pisky

This terrace enjoys one of the finest views in Hungary, set on the Pisky walkway linking Tihany Abbey and Echo Hill. From here, Lake Balaton stretches out like an inland sea, its shimmering turquoise surface truly unique. Booking isn’t possible, and, as expected, a short walk is required. The thatched-roof building boasts a spacious terrace with simple yet well-kept furniture. Instead of flowers, potted herbs adorn the tables. The menu leans Mediterranean, particularly Italian with the welcome inclusion of ingredients from small-scale producers. There is a dedicated pizza section on the menu, fired in the large wood oven on the terrace. Despite the high footfall, service remains smooth and professional – dishes arrive at a pleasant pace. While not especially inventive, the food is consistently well-prepared and flavourful. The strawberry soup is fresh and vibrant, with firm berries and a topping of pistachios adding a crisp texture. Griddled chicken breast avoids the usual pitfalls – juicy inside, not undercooked, and far from dry. The parsley-garlic risotto is a highlight: creamy and well-seasoned, with pomegranate seeds adding colour, crunch, and a bright, fruity lift. The wine list revolves around Balaton and Italian producers and the drinks list is bar-like in scope, naturally featuring lavender lemonade: Tihany is the home of lavender in Hungary. Here, the kitchen doesn’t try to steal the show from the view – but its quietly reliable quality is a virtue in itself.
