Völgyhíd Konyha és Rét

Set at the foot of Central Europe’s largest viaduct, the Kőröshegy valley bridge, this restaurant is surrounded by a beautiful panoramic view, a wide open meadow, hammocks, and a playground. Upstairs you will find the gourmet bistro; downstairs, a more relaxed café with a street food and ice cream counter. When we visited, the lower level drew a noticeably larger crowd. Upstairs, the restaurant’s interior design concept is striking: modern and minimalist, but never out of step with the natural surroundings. Instead, it allows the spectacular landscape to shine. The furniture is especially comfortable. Service is warm and attentive, and the menu reads like a true bistro offering – compact enough to fit on a single A4 sheet and refreshed regularly. Seasonality and Hungarian flavours are front and centre, laced with subtle Asian accents. The plating is modern and attractive, with custom-made ceramic plates by a Hungarian artist highlighting the colour and composition of each dish. One standout was the “crispy trout, summer squash, squash velouté, dill” – in essence, a refined riff on a classic vegetable stew, topped with a crackling panko-crusted trout fritter. It was a dish of harmony, full of fresh flavours and free of excess. A clear signature of chef Péter Pauer. The wine list is compact but thoughtfully curated, focusing admirably on Balaton wines. The spirits selection is similarly tight and well-considered, stylishly eschewing commercial options. Once prone to inconsistency, Völgyhíd Konyha & Rét has now found its stride, delivering the standards expected in a refined countryside bistro.
